The relaxation induced during the massage might feel like the endpoint, but massage care continues after leaving. First off, rest your body. Though you may feel relaxed and calm, it is important to remember the muscles have been intensely manipulated and worked on, thus needing time to recover. Try to schedule the massage appointment when other obligations and responsibilities will not follow. Continue care by drinking water and grabbing a bite to eat. Lightheadedness may occur and water and food can counteract dehydration and low blood sugars.
Swedish massage was invented by a Swedish fencing instructor named Per Henrik Ling in the 1830s. When he was injured in the elbows, he reportedly cured himself using tapping (percussion) strokes around the affected area. He later developed the technique currently known as Swedish massage. This technique was brought to the United States from Sweden by two brothers, Dr. Charles and Dr. George Taylor in the 1850s. The specific techniques used in Swedish massage involve the application of long gliding strokes, friction, and kneading and tapping movements on the soft tissues of the body. Sometimes passive or active joint movements are also used.

Deep tissue massage is often used to address deeper and longer-term pains and health challenges. For example, if you were in a serious car accident as a child and suffered severe whiplash, you may have residual problems, even as an adult. Deep tissue massage can work to relieve that long-term neck pain. Or, if you had a bad knee from playing soccer for years and still have stiffness, deep tissue massage can release some of that scar tissue and allow more freedom of movement in your joints. Like Shiatsu, Tui Na uses rhythmic compression along energy channels of the body, as well as a variety of techniques that manipulate and lubricate the joints. Therapeutic massage is used in the treatment of diseases and injuries of the motor and support apparatus, metabolic disturbances (obesity, diabetes mellitus, and gout), and diseases of the cardiovascular, respiratory, and nervous systems. In reflex-segmental massage various organs and tissues are affected through the massage of certain areas of the skin, subcutaneous tissue, and muscles. Reflex-segmental massage is prescribed for therapeutic purposes, as is pneumomassage, or vacuum massage, in which waves of air are used to improve the peripheral blood circulation. Syncardial massage, which is also prescribed for therapeutic purposes, involves the rhythmic compression of the vessels of the extremities by means of a special apparatus called the Synkardon. Another form of therapeutic massage, underwater massage, is performed by a special apparatus that creates an underwater stream under as much as two to four atmospheres pressure.

Massage therapy is also being investigated as an aide to patients with more neuromuscular disorders, such as multiple sclerosis (MS). A Iranian 2013 study published in Clinical Rehabilitation looked at 48 individuals with MS who participated in a five-week massage experiment. They were assigned to one of four groups: massage therapy, exercise therapy, combined massage-exercise therapy and control group.

Deep tissue has been found to improve muscle function and range of motion, break up scar tissue and adhesions, and decrease pain. It is thought that when muscles are tensed, they block oxygen and nutrients, leading to inflammation that builds up toxins in the muscle tissue.  A deep tissue massage may help loosen muscle tissues, release toxins from muscles and get blood and oxygen circulating properly. Because many toxins are released, it is recommended to drink plenty of water after a deep tissue session to help eliminate these toxins from the body.
Tapotement is the percussive technique where the therapist uses a cupping or hacking technique. This is a great way to finish a massage – it’s a little stimulating and helps to wake up the body so we can get off the table and on with our day. (Don’t hesitate to request it from your therapist if they do not do it on their own! However, if they have bad rhythm, they may not be as good as a talented bongo player!).
Contrary to popular belief, Swedish Massage was not created by anyone from Sweden.  The History of Swedish massage by Robert Calvert describes where Swedish massage came from.  Per Ling a Swedish Physiologist and gymnastics instructor created something known as the Swedish Movements or Swedish Movement Cure (link to Massage Today Article: November, 2010, Vol. 10, Issue 11 The Swedish Movement CureBy Judi Calvert, LMP ) but it was focused on movement which is only one component of Swedish Massage and not the basic techniques of efflerage, pettrissage and so on (see below).    Johann Mezger promoted Swedish Massage and helped make it more popular in the US.
Swedish massage therapy is probably one of the more relaxing and therapeutic massage techniques. It involves the use of the hands, forearms and elbows to work the superficial muscles. It's designed to promote relaxation, increase oxygen flow in the body and rid the body of toxins. This is a great massage to get if it's your first time getting a massage or if you get massage only once in a while.

Because sports massages center on specific areas, anyone who lives in active lifestyle can benefit from the occasional sports massage. You don’t even necessarily need to have a sports injury. Regular sports massages can help reduce the potential for sports injuries by tending to the affected muscles before they’ve been worked past their limits. You’ll experience better flexibility and greater endurance the next time you set yourself in motion.
Reflexologists posit that the blockage of an energy field, invisible life force, or Qi, can prevent healing. Another tenet of reflexology is the belief that practitioners can relieve stress and pain in other parts of the body through the manipulation of the feet. One claimed explanation is that the pressure received in the feet may send signals that 'balance' the nervous system or release chemicals such as endorphins that reduce stress and pain. These hypotheses are rejected by the medical community, who cite a lack of scientific evidence and the well-tested germ theory of disease.[9]
Muscle injury and soreness are an occupational hazard when it comes to athletics. Coaches, athletes, and professionals in the field of sports medicine have found that massage can provide several benefits to the body such as increased blood flow, reduced muscle tension, and an increased sense of well-being. The majority of research on psychological effects of massage has concluded that massage produces positive effects on recovery and post-exercise massage has been shown to reduce the severity of muscle soreness. While there is no research focusing specifically on the benefits of deep tissue massage on muscle rehabilitation, studies find that massage therapy, in general, can help with performance, recovery, and muscle injury prevention.8

Alhough he was a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength and Conditioning Association at the time, Pietrunti says that he ultimately decided to pursue licensure in massage therapy as well. This provided that missing link while also being “a good way to ‘bridge the gap’ and provide a better service to my clients,” he says.
Some massage therapists travel to their clients’ home, office, or hotel for Swedish massage services. In general, off-site massages cost more than those provided in a therapist’s studio to help cover the extra time, effort and transportation expenses in travelling to and from the client’s location with their massage table and other equipment.
