When treating an injury, however, it is best to seek advice from a qualified sports therapist or a specialist in sports medicine before performing any massage. Massage therapy is also being investigated as an aide to patients with more neuromuscular disorders, such as multiple sclerosis (MS). A Iranian 2013 study published in Clinical Rehabilitation looked at 48 individuals with MS who participated in a five-week massage experiment. They were assigned to one of four groups: massage therapy, exercise therapy, combined massage-exercise therapy and control group.
It seems like people who call to get a massage fall into 2 camps: those who want a deep tissue massage, and those that are afraid of it. I have heard a lot of interesting stories of people getting a massage on vacation and barely being able to move the next day. Or people who think they should be sore for a week after a massage “if it’s a good one”. Well I think it is time we went over what Deep Tissue Massage (DTM) is, and when it is indicated.
A good massage therapist will never force pressure into the muscle. They will continue to apply pressure until the muscle pushes back against them. The muscle will then slowly begin to release and allow the therapist to move along it. The pressure used should not be painful, but should walk a fine line between pleasurable release of tension and a pain-blocking response from the body (tensing up).
Strength and stamina: There is no question that massage therapists must have a great deal of physical strength and endurance to perform their jobs every day. It takes a significant amount of arm and shoulder strength to perform various massage techniques especially when you have to do it all day with consistency. This is especially true for those who perform deep tissue massage or Swedish massage. Most sessions run an hour long. So, if you see at least six clients a day, it is crucial that you maintain your strength, focus, and attention to detail.
The pathways postulated by reflexologists have not been anatomically demonstrated; and it is safe to assume that they do not exist. This a great book, but to be honest my review is really for the use of the book and DVD series in tandem, you really need to have both of them to get the full benefit of both. The book even has notes that will tell you were to look on the video's to find the techniques referenced. I first bought this book right before I started Massage therapy school. I read it and watched the DVD's and was completely lost. Then after a semester of training and taking myology I read it and watched the DVD's again and was blown away by how much I learned from them. So I would say it's probably best to wait until you have a basic level of professional massage and a thorough knowledge of the muscles system before reading this book. What art teaches is not a series of techniques that you would use to put together a massage therapy routine. The book is really more for teaching work that can be done on specific body parts weather you doing a site specific massage to address a structural deviation or chronic pain. Or for teaching you specific techniques that you can use in conjunction with a full body therapeutic massage to enhance your massage by addressing specific problems for the individual client. He also teaches you a number of different positions and draping techniques that you can use beyond just the traditional prone, supine, and occasional side lying position. Overall if you are a massage therapist or a massage therapy student I would highly recommend purchasing this book and sucking it up and purchasing the DVD set as well.
