There is not necessarily a hard line between these two techniques, and many sessions often incorporate both depending on your needs. It is usually the case that not all the muscles in your body need deep tissue techniques applied. Rather than being overly concerned with choosing the “right” session, make sure you communicate to your therapist the goals for your session so that he or she can customize the right blend of techniques for you. One massage style is often the foundation of the session, with other techniques used as needed. Due to the slow pace of deep tissue massage it is necessary to schedule a 90-minute session if you would like your full body addressed. While there is no research focusing specifically on the benefits of deep tissue massage on muscle rehabilitation, studies find that massage therapy, in general, can help with performance, recovery, and muscle injury prevention.8
Traditionally designed to apply pressure to layers of muscle, tendons and other tissues deep under the skin, deep tissue massage can be very effective in relieving problem areas and is highly therapeutic. Deep tissue massage is generally a modality to consider for athletes as well as the eight-to-five desk job. Muscles easily become tense and deep tissue massage can relieve some chronic patterns of pain and tension, specifically in the back, shoulder and neck areas.

There are five primary techniques used in the performance of a Swedish massage at home: effleurage, petrissage, friction, vibration, and tapotement. Effleurage and petrissage are the most common techniques utilized by most massage therapists, and the most recognized by those who have ever received a Swedish massage. These are the long flowing or gliding strokes (effleurage) and kneading (petrissage).
This a great book, but to be honest my review is really for the use of the book and DVD series in tandem, you really need to have both of them to get the full benefit of both. The book even has notes that will tell you were to look on the video's to find the techniques referenced. I first bought this book right before I started Massage therapy school. I read it and watched the DVD's and was completely lost. Then after a semester of training and taking myology I read it and watched the DVD's again and was blown away by how much I learned from them. So I would say it's probably best to wait until you have a basic level of professional massage and a thorough knowledge of the muscles system before reading this book. What art teaches is not a series of techniques that you would use to put together a massage therapy routine. The book is really more for teaching work that can be done on specific body parts weather you doing a site specific massage to address a structural deviation or chronic pain. Or for teaching you specific techniques that you can use in conjunction with a full body therapeutic massage to enhance your massage by addressing specific problems for the individual client. He also teaches you a number of different positions and draping techniques that you can use beyond just the traditional prone, supine, and occasional side lying position. Overall if you are a massage therapist or a massage therapy student I would highly recommend purchasing this book and sucking it up and purchasing the DVD set as well.
Deep Tissue is a very specific massage treatment in which the therapist uses knuckles and elbow's to "strip out" muscle tissue as far down to the bone as possible. Sound invasive? It is! It is definitely not for everyone. However there are millions of people out there that would never have their treatment any other way. This modality can be helpful to the following people: athletes who are considerably harder on their bodies than the average person, people who are undergoing physical therapy to aid in the breakdown process of scar tissue, (AFTER PROPER HEALING FROM THE INJURY HAS OCCURED), or anyone who has very dense tissue and thus responds better to the work.
The differences mentioned above can assist in determining which massage out of the two would best suit prospective massage therapist clients. Professional players whom of which carry out rigorous heavy-duty activities all year round are regular customers of deep-tissue massage therapists for achieving quicker recovery, alleviation of pain as well as a better posture.
When you think of a massage, you probably think of soothing music, a gentle brush of hands softly kneading the stress from your shoulders, maybe even of a loved one offering to rub your back after a long day at work. While some massages can be soothing, and rely on gentle touches to work out a client’s stress or anxiety, there are other massages that have a little more grit to them. For example, the Deep Tissue massage, which is very similar in style to the Swedish massage, utilizes some of the same techniques as its much gentler cousin; Deep Tissue massages, however, are designed to focus on the deeper layers of muscle tissues and fascia, the protective layer that surrounds muscles and joints. Working out these harder to reach muscles will require more pressure, making the Deep Tissue massage slightly uncomfortable, gritty and highly effective.
While many believe that Deep Tissue Massage simply means heavy pressure, this is a misconception.  Deep Tissue Massage includes many of the same techniques from its foundation in Swedish massage, but takes it in a different direction with a different purpose. Often times the pressure is deeper, but it doesn’t have to be.  Remember, deeper isn’t always better.  Deep Tissue Massage should be looked at as technique with a purpose, to provide structural and functional outcomes.
Reflexology is a bodywork technique that uses pressure points in the feet and hands in an effort to stimulate organs and systems throughout the body. Reflexology practitioners claim they can treat a wide range of maladies simply by manipulating these pressure points. The general idea is similar to that of other forms of alternative and Eastern medicine, such as acupuncture: clear blockages in the flow of the body's life force (or Qi) and healing will follow.
Deep tissue technique uses very little to no lubricant so that the muscles can be hooked or grabbed, thereby stretching and lengthening them, and to separate adhered muscle compartments. Strokes will be considerably slower and possibly shorter as the therapist waits for a slow release of tension. Some areas may be skipped so more time can be spent on specific areas of need. Doing this provides better alignment of the muscles and less restriction in the joints, thereby improving their movement and function. It is a massage in which the primary goal is less about general relaxation and more about promoting change in the actual structure of the body.
