I have to break in down in easy terms for them to understand. On many when I have tried to do deep tissue they say ok too deep lighten up lol! I tell them that they aren’t ready for deep tissue. I had a deep tissue massage with Rosalyn last Thursday (10/11) due to ongoing pain and tightness in my upper back and shoulders. I usually get massages once a week, covered by my health insurance, but the relief I get from those massages is extremely brief and insignificant. Sports Massage can be characterized two ways: pre-activity and post-activity massage. With no lotion or oil to cause sliding, it becomes possible to fully get a hold of the shortened fascia; this is necessary in order to lengthen it. Slow, sustained strokes are what can change this tissue from a short, hardened state to a lengthened, fluid state. The process is not unlike stretching salt water taffy. You’ve got to get a hold of it, warm it up, and work it very slowly. The work may sometimes be intense, eliciting moderate discomfort as old adhesions and chronic dysfunctional patterns are altered. But that leads to a much more fluid, easy sense in the body.

Trust and pain. Bear in mind that feeling safe is critical to the experience of good pain. Tiny differences in trust and comfort can make the difference between an intense pain being good or bad. Much of the “goodness” of good pain comes from mental context, from knowing that a pain is not dangerous or pointless, that it will not increase suddenly, or anything else yucky or shocking.


While a typical runner’s sports massage focuses primarily on the legs, Denunzio insists on incorporating upper body work as well. As she explains it, “nobody has perfect form, especially when they’re fatigued” and runners can unknowingly tense their upper bodies when working out, which in turn creates tightness in their arms, shoulders and back. Ideally, those areas should receive a little TLC as well.

Connective tissue stimulation. A lot of therapists are keen on stretching connective tissues — tendons, ligaments, and layers of Saran wrap-like tissue called “fascia.” I’m not a huge fan of this style, but certainly it’s a way of generating many potent and novel sensations, which may be inherently valuable to us — another form of touch. Although “improving” the fascia itself is implausible and unproven, perhaps fascial manipulations affect bodies indirectly, just as a sailboat is affected by pulling on its rigging. People have written whole books full of speculation along these lines. So, as long as the sensations are not like skin tearing (that’s an ugly pain for sure), you might choose to tolerate this kind of massage if it seems to be helping you.

While a Swedish massage works great to help people who suffer from health conditions it also works wonders on people who suffer from everyday troubles and concerns. There are many things in our life that can cause us to be stressed and worried on a constant basis. The more that we stress the more our muscles became tense and we find it hard to relax them.

I went for a sports massage two weeks ago as I was recommended to have one as it was suggested it might help with tight calves, a side effect of some other injuries I have. I’ve been for sports massages many, many times before over the years. This one was one of the most painful experiences of my life — when I got home I was almost sick and felt in shock. My right achilles tendon was raging and it’s been bad ever since. It hurt so much when it was done (like someone was sticking knives in) and I kept asking if it was meant to hurt. I wish I’d just stopped the session or objected but I didn’t. It used to be a bad injury that affected me walking for about 6 months so I’m just devastated about this. I can hardly bear to put shoes on and its all this time on. I know there are good practitioners out there but experiences like this just make me want to stay away. I wish I’d gone to a “gentle” one.

Swedish massage is the most common massage therapy technique in the United States. (In case you were wondering, Swedish massage is called “classic massage” in Sweden.)   A Swedish massage focuses on overall relaxation, circulation, and physical and mental wellness.  Swedish massage includes gliding, kneading, tapping, stretching, and cross-friction strokes.

There are many types of massage therapy, from classics like Swedish and deep tissue to more exotic styles like shiatsu. Whether you'd like to branch out a bit or have a health condition or injury, choosing a style of massage can be confusing if you're not quite sure what it involves. According to practitioners, foot reflexology is a simple, non-invasive method to help balance the body. It has been described as a natural therapy that requires the application of a specific type of pressure on particular areas of the feet. It gets its school of thought from the principle that there are reflexes in the feet which correspond to every part of the body, so by understanding the “maps,” you can do anything from relaxation to improved circulation, and also add a general feeling of wellness. It’s like a massage for your feet…that affects your whole body!
Swedish and deep tissue massages are very similar. The primary difference is the level of pressure involved. If you’re looking for relaxation and relief from tense, tight muscles, Swedish massage is probably right for you. If you’re recovering from an injury, deep tissue massage can be a helpful part of your treatment plan. Swedish massage is the most commonly offered technique of massage therapy, and it's usually the basis of most of the massages that you will receive in the United States. It involves the use of 5 strokes that include long gliding strokes, kneading, tapping, friction, and vibration. So Swedish massage is one of the basic techniques that most massage therapists will use to build other techniques on. There are lots of things, different combinations that you can use on the body. With the cross-fiber friction, you can get some nice warming of the muscles, and getting the connective tissue to start to release. With the long gliding strokes, you can apply the massage oil and the cream, and that's also really great for warming up the muscles. And kind of getting that person in a relaxed state to start receiving massage, and to get their breathing nice and even flowing. It's a nice technique for opening and closing the massage. You can the end the massage. And one of my favorite things to do is to end the massage with the tapping. And it's kind of like a percussion drumming on the belly of the muscle. Kind of the thicker part of the muscle. you want to make sure and stay away from the bones, as this could be really uncomfortable. But if you do some tapping on the muscles, it can just really get the muscles to release any tension that might still be kind of stuck in the muscle tissue.

But the relief model is certainly tempting. There are many painful-but-relieving analogies in medicine and biology.15 That’s similar to what good pain in massage feels like, but it’s not the same: no one thinks that lancing a boil or popping a shoulder joint back in is anything but painful while it’s happening.16 And we can’t necessarily take the good pain sensation at face value and assume it means there’s actually going to be a positive outcome. Practices resembling reflexology may have existed in previous historical periods. Similar practices have been documented in the histories of China and Egypt.[9] Reflexology was introduced to the United States in 1913 by William H. Fitzgerald, M.D. (1872–1942), an ear, nose, and throat specialist, and Edwin F. Bowers. Fitzgerald claimed that applying pressure had an anesthetic effect on other areas of the body.[16][17] It was modified in the 1930s and 1940s by Eunice D. Ingham (1889–1974), a nurse and physiotherapist.[18][19] Ingham claimed that the feet and hands were especially sensitive, and mapped the entire body into "reflexes" on the feet, renaming "zone therapy" reflexology.[20] "Modern reflexologists use Ingham's methods, or similar techniques developed by the reflexologist Laura Norman."[9]
It is important to note that the reflexology group only received two months of treatment, whereas the ibuprofen group had two months. In addition to being “associated with more reduction of intensity and duration of menstrual pain in comparison with ibuprofen therapy,” it appeared that reflexology actually promotes healing and not just pain management.

Deep tissue massage is a stronger massage method and is not recommended for clients with sensitive skin or who are sensitive to strong pressure. The skin can become bruised after a deep tissue massage. Clients should always make therapists aware of their desired pressure and alert therapists if their massage is too strong. This method can also be integrated with other massage techniques.
As this was my first massage, it was a bit surreal to undress all except for my panties. Rosalyn worked from top to bottom, explaining where my knots were (in my shoulders, arms, and lower back) while talking about her childhood history. I never thought that arms could be massaged, but let me tell you that it made a tremendous difference for the amount of time I spent in front of the computer analyzing data! She massaged my head, neck, back, arms, shoulders, buttocks, legs, and feet. She goes the extra way in pulling your arm away to stretch out the joints, and she also works you like a puppet to get the maximum stretch and popping of your spine. It was a bit scary, but pleasant! If you're looking for deep pressure, this is definitely it. I had to stop her kneads on my calves, as the pain was a bit much. She attributed her strength to working out. I was impressed. Since then I've been a regular of hers for almost ten years now.

Thank you for explaining the difference between a deep tissue massage and a firm pressure massage. The place I go to offers different techniques and I have been wondering what the difference was between those two. Good to know that a deep tissue massage uses very little to no lubricant so the muscles can be hooked and grabbed. That one sounds like a really great option.
